How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Rotating your tires is a simple service that can have a huge impact on your car’s performance, safety, and even longevity, so how often should you rotate your tires? The answer depends on both your car and your driving habits. On average, experts recommend a tire rotation every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. Want to find out the best maintenance schedule for your particular vehicle? Take a look at our service tips below, and learn when to rotate your tires at Mazda of Claremont!

When to Rotate Tires on FWD & RWD Vehicles

Why do we rotate tires at all? As you drive, your wheels receive an uneven amount of pressure. For example, a front-wheel drive (FWD) car sends engine power to the front wheels. This means the front wheels are more likely to wear out before the rear tires. Rotating the tires ensures that tires receive more even wear and tear, which means you get more life out of your tread. Keep these tire rotation tips in mind:

  • Front and rear-wheel vehicles (RWD) both get tire rotations around 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Check your owner’s manual for recommendations based on your make and model.
  • Front and rear-wheel vehicles use different tire rotation patterns. FWD models bring the rear wheels directly forward to the front axles while the front tires change axles as they move back.
  • The opposite pattern is used for a RWD model. RWD models bring the front wheels directly back to the rear axles while the rear tires change axles as they move back.
  • If you take part in more extreme driving conditions like racing and off-roading in San Dimas, your tires undergo more strain than a normal daily driver. Talk with our service technicians for recommendations on your best tire rotation interval.

When to Rotate Tires on AWD Tire Vehicles

Knowing how many miles to rotate tires on an all-wheel drive model is a little different. That’s because all-wheel drive (AWD) models send out engine power to each wheel individually, which means the wear pattern is less predictable. Most experts recommend a tire rotation around every 3,000 – 5,000 miles if you use your AWD regularly. The tire rotation pattern is also distinctly different:

  1. The left rear goes to the right front spot.
  2. The right rear goes to the left front spot.
  3. The right front goes to the left rear spot.
  4. The left front goes to the right rear spot.

Why Rotate Tires?

Now you know when to rotate tires, but why rotate tires at all? Rotating your tires helps to prevent the breakdown of the rubber, which helps to maintain good tread levels and better handling. Here are a few additional benefits:

  • Greater traction on slippery roads
  • Less noise on the road
  • Less stress on the drivetrain
