How to Disconnect and Remove a Car Battery

Auto Mechanic Replacing Car Battery
Curious about how to disconnect a car battery or how to remove a car battery? Many Rancho Cucamonga drivers are looking to learn more about their vehicles, and battery replacements are common enough when it comes to your vehicle’s maintenance. Removing a car battery is pretty straightforward though, and all you’ll need are a few tools and to follow some precautions so that you’re working safely.

When Should You Disconnect a Car Battery?

  • For Needed Maintenance: Your vehicle may need maintenance that requires you to disconnect the battery so that electrical issues can be avoided for you and your vehicle.
  • When Replacing or Recharging the Battery: Disconnecting the battery is mandatory when replacing your battery, and sometimes your battery needs to be removed from its holding tray in order to be charged.

How to Disconnect a Car Battery

  1. Turn off the ignition. Never attempt to disconnect a car battery while the power is on, and always wear gloves and safety goggles.
  2. Locate the battery. Open your vehicle’s hood when your car is shut off and locate the battery. The battery should be large and appear block-like with two large cables attached to it near the engine bay’s surface. Sometimes the car battery will be in the trunk. Consult your user’s manual if you’re having difficulty.
  3. Find the negative terminal. It’s typically on top of the battery with an attached cable. It’s marked with a “-” symbol (a positive terminal is marked with a “+” sign). The negative terminal is also black, and it may have a black plastic cap for labeling (a positive terminal is red and has a red plastic cap).
  4. Loosen the negative terminal’s nut with a wrench. You’ll need a wrench that’s right for your nuts and bolts for the battery terminal, and you’ll need to remove any plastic caps on your battery if your battery has them. Sizes vary though it doesn’t hurt to have a wrench kit by your side. Place the appropriately-sized wrench on the negative terminal’s nut and turn it counterclockwise to loosen the nut. Remove the negative connector and repeat the process for the positive terminal.
  5. After you loosen the nut, remove the negative connector cable from the battery andmake sure to push it to the side as far away as possible. You need to make sure that this cable is entirely out of the way so that it doesn’t come in contact with the battery until you’re ready. Some newer vehicles have their cables “seized” or they’re attached to the battery tray or post. For these, you’ll probably need a battery cable removal tool to fully remove that negative connector. These are fairly common to find at an auto part store or online. After removing the negative connector, you’ll repeat the exact same process for your positive connector. Remember to push the cable far away and out of contact with the battery, just as before.

Your battery should now be disconnected. If you need help with disconnecting your car battery, our service center can help with quick and fast service, and we can even help you order parts!

How to Remove a Car Battery

After disconnecting your car battery, you’re good to go with removing it from its tray. Your battery most likely is held in place with a securing clamp that goes over the top of the unit. Use a socket wrench to remove those nuts and then remove the securing clamp or lift it away from your battery.

You should now be able to lift that battery out of its tray using your hands or with the handle attached to it (if it has one). Just be careful with your battery. They weigh much heavier than what Upland drivers may think, coming in at around 30-50 pounds. You’ll also want to be mindful of any potential battery acid if you’re replacing the battery, so hold your battery level without letting it get too close to your skin.

How Many Volts is a Car Battery?

Whether you’re just disconnecting or removing a car battery, it’s important to be aware of the volts in your battery. A fully charged car battery should be at about 12.6 volts or higher. When the engine is running, this should bump up to 13.7 to 14.7 volts. Here’s how to test for low voltage:

  • Start your vehicle and turn on the headlights.
  • If you notice that the lights are dim, your battery’s voltage may be struggling.
  • If your lights get brighter once you rev the engine, the alternator might be producing some current, but not enough current when idle to keep your battery charged.
  • If your lights look normal, even when revving the engine, your battery is most likely working just fine.
